I'm a proud mama.
Miss Neff is San's teacher, and is such an exceptional one. We are always happy to have her as one of the kids teachers. She runs a great balance between keeping us up on the things the kids needs to work on, and the positives that she sees. Today, I got to hear a positive. Mind you, there have been some "working on" things, like cutting down on the number of yellow slips San gets (it's what they get when they don't hand in homework), or remembering to HAND IN his reading log so that he can get credit for the books he's read.
But today was a character thing. Seems San found some money on his way to the lunchroom today. Not just a little bit, either. 2000 NT, which is about $60. Now when I first heard her telling the story, my first thought was that he was probably figuring how many Star Wars Legos he could buy with that money. But San took it straight to her so that the owner could find their lost money. So, Miss Neff thanked him and took the money to the high school office. The secretary there told Miss Neff to thank San, and if no one came forward to claim the money, then San could keep it.
Now this is where I'm just busting with pride. Miss Neff let San know that he could keep the money if no one claimed it. Again, I was thinking his mind would go straight to Star Wars Legos. Instead, without another thought he said, "Then we should give the money to Asris." (This is a boy his class sponsors in Europe) Miss Neff mentioned that he didn't pause even for a second when giving this response.
You know, sometimes our kids surprise us. We can teach all we can, but we never really know, until moments like this, if they are internalizing the truths being taught them. Needless to say, he's gotten lots of extra hugs and pats on the back today. However, we would never have known about this if it hadn't been for Miss Neff having enough insight and foresight to let us know about this. She easily could have forgotten, or just enjoyed the moment for herself. We are very grateful to her for sharing this little tidbit with us!
